Visionary Expresses Deep Concern Over the Medjugorje Secrets

Since June 24, 1981, the small village of Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been a focal point of spiritual intrigue, drawing millions of pilgrims seeking connection with the divine. Six individuals, known as the Medjugorje visionaries, claim to have received apparitions and messages from the Virgin Mary, who identified herself as the “Queen of Peace.” Among the most captivating aspects of these alleged encounters are the ten secrets entrusted to the visionaries—prophecies said to pertain to the future of Medjugorje, the Church, and the world. As of March 31, 2025, recent statements from one visionary have sparked renewed attention and unease, revealing a profound worry about the imminent unfolding of these secrets.

Marija Pavlović-Lunetti, now 59, has been a central figure in the Medjugorje phenomenon. Born and raised in the hamlet of Bijakovići at the foot of Apparition Hill, Marija continues to report daily apparitions and delivers a monthly message to the world on the 25th of each month. Having received nine of the ten secrets, she has long maintained a calm and faithful demeanor, emphasizing prayer, fasting, and conversion as the Virgin Mary’s core directives. However, in recent months, Marija’s tone has shifted, reflecting a palpable sense of urgency and concern about what lies ahead.

In a rare public statement earlier this year, Marija hinted at the gravity of the secrets yet to be revealed. “Our Lady has been preparing us for decades,” she said during a gathering of pilgrims in Medjugorje. “But now, I feel a heaviness in my heart. She is asking more of us—more prayer, more sacrifice—because the time is closer than we realize.” While Marija refrained from disclosing specifics—consistent with the visionaries’ pledge to keep the secrets confidential until the appointed time—her words suggest that the events foretold may bring significant challenges.

The secrets, as described by the visionaries over the years, vary in scope. Three of them—Mirjana Dragičević-Soldo, Ivanka Ivanković-Elez, and Jakov Čolo—have received all ten, and their daily apparitions have ceased, replaced by annual encounters. Marija, along with Vicka Ivanković-Mijatović and Ivan Dragičević, still await their final secret. The third secret, widely discussed among devotees, promises a visible, permanent, and indestructible sign on Apparition Hill, intended as a testament to skeptics. Yet, it is the later secrets, particularly the last few, that seem to weigh heavily on Marija’s mind. Mirjana, who will announce the secrets to the world through a chosen priest, Fr. Petar Ljubičić, has previously indicated that some involve “warnings” and “punishments” for humanity’s sins, though prayer and fasting can mitigate their severity.

Marija’s growing unease aligns with a notable event from June 2024, when she relayed an unprecedented request from the Virgin Mary: a nine-day novena for world peace, culminating on June 24, the 43rd anniversary of the apparitions. For the first time, Mary reportedly asked the faithful to climb Apparition Hill each night at 10:00 p.m. to pray the Rosary, awaiting an extraordinary apparition at 11:30 p.m. This deviation from the usual schedule, coupled with Marija’s subsequent reflections, has led some to speculate that the secrets’ revelation may be approaching. “She is calling us to be ready,” Marija said in a follow-up message. “The world is not listening, and I worry for those who turn away.”

This concern echoes the broader context of Medjugorje’s messages, which have consistently urged humanity to return to God amid rising secularism, conflict, and moral decay. The Virgin Mary’s pleas for peace take on added weight in 2025, as global tensions—wars, environmental crises, and social unrest—continue to escalate. Marija’s anxiety may reflect not only the secrets’ content but also the fear that humanity remains unprepared for their consequences. “Our Lady has said she wants to save us,” Marija emphasized, “but we must choose to follow her Son. I pray every day that more hearts will open before it’s too late.”

The Vatican, which has historically approached Medjugorje with caution, has not fully endorsed the apparitions but authorized public worship there in September 2024. This “nihil obstat” ruling acknowledges the spiritual fruits—conversions, healings, and vocations—while refraining from confirming the supernatural nature of the events. Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, noted that the focus should be on Mary’s call to encounter Christ, not the visionaries themselves. Yet, for Marija and her fellow seers, the secrets remain a personal burden, one that seems to grow heavier as time progresses.

As Marija continues her mission—praying for the souls in purgatory and sharing monthly messages from her home near Milan or during visits to Medjugorje—her recent words have stirred both devotion and debate. Some pilgrims interpret her worry as a sign of imminent divine intervention, while skeptics question the prolonged nature of the apparitions and the secrecy surrounding the prophecies. Regardless, Marija’s heartfelt plea underscores a central theme of Medjugorje: a mother’s love urging her children to prepare for what’s to come.

For now, the world waits, and Marija prays. “I trust Our Lady,” she concluded in her latest reflection on March 25, 2025. “But I cannot help but feel the weight of what she has shown me. Please, join me in prayer—for peace, for conversion, for the strength to face whatever lies ahead.” As the secrets loom on the horizon, her call resonates with a timeless urgency, inviting believers and seekers alike to ponder the mysteries of Medjugorje and the future they portend.
