Dear Earth it Has Begun: When the Devil Blocks Catholics From the Spiritual Grace of the Messages of Medjugorje

On March 18th, 2024 Our Lady gave the visionary Mirjana an extraordinary Message that, by definition comes from Heaven. The Catholic Church, directed by the Vatican, now attaches the official citation “With Church Approval” to most messages from Medjugorje.

Our Lady’s most recent message from Medjugorje has immense spiritual power and practical advice. “Follow me and I will lead you to my Son, to Salvation.

Isn’t this the single most important characteristic of our faith? – Salvation? Getting to Heaven?

Yet, here we have the Catholic Church “approving” a message, whose true origins remain a mystery, but from a practical point of view the messages are understood to come from Heaven and delivered by the Blessed Mother to the Visionary Mirjana, but sadly, many Catholic take a “ho-hum” approach to this incredible occurrence.

So why the apathy to something so extraordinary?

The answer may lie in how the devil blocks spiritual graces.

In Catholic theology, the idea of the devil “blocking” the Holy Spirit from prayers isn’t explicitly framed as a direct mechanism, but rather as an influence that can disrupt a person’s spiritual life or connection to God. The Holy Spirit, as the third person of the Trinity, is omnipotent and cannot be overpowered by the devil in an absolute sense. However, Satan can attempt to interfere with an individual’s receptivity to grace, including through prayer, by sowing doubt, distraction, temptation, or despair. This concept is rooted in spiritual warfare, a longstanding Catholic belief that the devil seeks to undermine faith and holiness.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (e.g., CCC 2846-2849) emphasizes that evil, including the devil’s influence, can tempt people away from prayerful trust in God, but it doesn’t suggest the Holy Spirit itself can be blocked. Instead, the devil might hinder a person’s ability to pray effectively by exploiting human weaknesses—think of distractions during Mass, feelings of unworthiness, or persistent sinful habits that dull spiritual sensitivity. St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (6:12) speaks of wrestling “against the spiritual forces of evil,” underscoring this ongoing battle where prayer is both a target and a weapon.

Catholic tradition offers practical responses. Prayers like the St. Michael Prayer (“defend us in battle… against the wickedness and snares of the devil”) or the “Prayer to Defeat the Work of Satan” directly address this interference, asking God to cast out evil influences. Exorcists and spiritual writers, like Fr. Chad Ripperger, note that Satan’s tactics often involve disrupting peace or faith, which can make prayers feel unanswered or ineffective. Yet, the Church teaches that persistent, faithful prayer—especially with sacramental support like Confession or the Eucharist—overcomes such obstacles, as the devil’s power is limited compared to God’s.

If it feels like the devil is “blocking” the Holy Spirit in your prayers, Catholics would say he’s likely attacking your disposition, not the Spirit itself. The remedy? Double down on prayer, invoke saints like Mary or Michael, and trust that God’s grace breaks through any interference, even if it’s not immediately felt. The devil can hassle you, but he can’t stop the Trinity from hearing you.
