New Version Of Ave Maria – Some Say Most Beautiful Ever

Whenever someone mentions “Ave Maria,” Schubert’s famous setting often comes to mind. While Schubert’s piece is undoubtedly beautiful and widely recognized, Biebl’s rendition might just surpass it in sheer beauty.

Biebl’s “Ave Maria” opens with a monastic chant, then unfolds into a stunning motet that, despite being composed in the 20th century, echoes the rich polyphonic tradition of the Catholic Church. The melody itself is a metaphor, ascending towards heaven.

Originally written for a men’s choir, Biebl’s “Ave Maria” was initially overlooked. However, a chance encounter with the Cornell University Glee Club led to an arrangement for mixed choir. Chanticleer further popularized the piece by incorporating it into their Christmas concerts in 1989.

VOCES8 and the Ringmasters have delivered a masterful interpretation of Biebl’s “Ave Maria,” challenging Schubert’s iconic rendition for the title of most popular setting. While Schubert’s piece is more accessible, Biebl’s complex arrangement requires a highly skilled choir to truly shine. However, the rich, polyphonic sound of Biebl’s work is undeniably captivating and could potentially enrich our local church music.
